Training will move from Blaise Castle back to Coombe Dingle for the winter months from Monday, September 7th.
It's only a short jaunt to Blaise from Coombe Dingle, so groups can still make use of some of the trails before the light completely goes and you can't see the tree stumps!
Who are we?
Westbury Harriers is a well established running club, based in Bristol, UK (the name 'Westbury' comes from the Westbury-on-Trym area in north-west Bristol where we were founded, although we now attract runners from all over Bristol and South Gloucestershire). We cater for all ages (youngsters of 9 to young-at-heart of 65+) and abilities (complete novices to established international). We have even had runners come along as complete beginners and progressed through to running for their country! Being a small club with a big reputation, we have a real 'family' atmosphere - so be warned: you might start by bringing along your offspring, but could end up getting seriously fit, yourself.

Training Camp in Newport on the Cardigan Bay, April 2009
Some of our youngsters took us over to the village of Newport on the Welsh Pembrokeshire Coast for a few days of training. Here is the story of the trip, in their own words...

The Edinburgh Marathon – 31st May 2009
Most marathon runners know how it feels on a hot day – you’ve been running for maybe 3 hours (less for the faster ones), you’re getting tired, the hottest part of the day is approaching and you still have 7 miles to go. The return route along the coast road towards the finish at Musselburgh seemed to be at a slower pace for most of us. Some runners just slowed down, some tried to keep up the pace and ‘hit the wall’, and one or two didn’t have much trouble. The water supply was running out at some stations, there was a long stretch at the loop (somewhere around mile 17 to 19) where I didn’t see any water. The official website states that some pallets of water were stolen in the early hours. I thought the supply was generally good, but later runners had the most problems.
Emma D’Alton was 9th female, excellent result. Trish Robson had another good run, finishing 6th in her age group. Graham Bazely was just seconds over the 4 hour mark, and for me a sub- 4 hour run was not likely in the last few miles, so I enjoyed them as much as possible. I was just happy to still be running after 20 miles without cramps or other injuries. The 26th mile marker was passed, I plodded on until I was passed by a ‘senior vet’, which for some reason fired me up for a ‘sprint’ finish. This was not helped on the final run-in over a sprung ‘wobble board’! This feature must have added to the spectator entertainment.

Man v. Horse marathon
There were some excellent team performances from Westbury Harriers' at the Man v. Horse marathon this weekend.
5 Westbury men took part in the main race - Anthony Glover finished 6th in 2.38.33, Rich Collinson 8th in 2.40.04 and John Terry 15th in 2.47.28, which was enough to secure the Men's team prize for the first 3 runners to complete the 22 mile course. In addition Fraser Jamieson was 33rd in 2.58.09 and Gareth Howard was 81st in 3.21.05.
Robyn Golding and Debbie Marsden formed a relay team, with Robyn running Legs 1 and 3, which won the ladies relay event in a time of 2.41.39 - which was good enough for 3rd team overall! A great effort considering the handicap of Robyn having to run 2 legs!!!

Westbury Men win the Rabbit
Well done to the Westbury Harriers men's team who won the June, Town and Country Harriers (TACH) race, called the 'Rowberrow Rabbit Run', as part of the 4 event summer series. The series is a very enjoyable but challenging off road 4 event summer series in 4 locations south of Bristol. The team consisted of Rich Collinson (individual winner), John Terry, Fraser Jamieson, Gareth Howard and Graham Clark. Debbie Marsden put in a good performance for the women, especially in light of her nasty fall. Everyone did well on a challenging multi-terrain course and definitely deserved their beers after the race!
